Composer, guitarist Joel Harrison ( www.joelharrison.com ) will have  new works premiering at Music on MacDougal at the Players Theatre,115 MacDougal Street, New York, NY  on October 28, 2009 at 8:00. This concert will be Mr. Harrison's first ever evening of all-notated compositions, after a lifetime of jazz performances. He will share the bill with Phil Fried. Tickets are $20 and can be obtained by calling (212) 352-3101.

A wildly diverse improviser/composer/arranger with a penchant for unorthodox instrumental combinations, guitarist Joel Harrison has sustained one of the most unpredictable discographies of the last decade with his chimerical mix of jazz, blues, chamber music, African and Indian folk music, and Appalachian tunes. The program for the October 28 concert will include the world premiere of "Why Has the Hunter Not Returned?" a Marimba Duo influenced by W. African music that will feature Gregory Secor and Judy Moonert from the acclaimed Michigan percussion duo Opus 21. (www.opus21.org/) It recently won a competition sponsored by West Coast percussion duo Ironworks. (www.ironworks.com ) Next up will be Marin Movement for solo percussion - vibes, bass drum, loops, and whistle.  It was inspired by the art of American landscape painter John Marin and was originally commissioned by Opus 21. The centerpiece of the evening is "It Seems Like Yesterday", a Five Movement Suite for piano, cello, clarinet, percussion, a reflection on episodes from the life of composer Joel Harrison's father, legendary journalist Gilbert A. Harrison (1915-2008) who was editor and publisher of The New Republic from 1953 to 1974. During=2 0those tumultuous years, the magazine was a strong voice against the Vietnam War, and a strong promoter of the civil rights and women's liberation movement.

Joel Harrison began to write the piece in 2007. It is about looking back in a haze of memory- father's and son's. It  roams through stories the Senior Mr. Harrison told as he aged. The music is some of Harrison's most inspired writing, full of jazz-influenced fireworks, soaring melodies, gorgeous harmony, riveting rhythmic twists, and an almost novelistic through line that carries the listener on a wild journey.

Some of the episodes that inspired the younger Mr. Harrison include Gilbert Harrison driving with his father cross-country in the 1930's selling diamonds from the trunk of their Packard; a trip to Nagasaki just after the bomb dropped; Gilbert Harrison watching George Gershwin perform "Rhapsody in Blue" and then driving all night to get home; falling asleep at the wheel. He survived a near fatal accident.

In the end, "It Seems Like Yesterday"  tells of  the slow demise from old age and attendant hallucinations and mental time warps.

The creation of "It Seems Like Yesterday" was made possible by generous funding from New York State Council on the Arts. The American Composers Forum underwrote it with funds provided by the Jerome Foundation

"With his clarity of vision and elaborately realized musical moves, Joel Harrison stands head and shoulders above many of his more highly touted contemporaries." Audiophile Magazine

Saturday Dec. 5: NYU Percussion Ensemble Masterworks. 8pm Loewe Theater

The New York University Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Jonathan Haas, will take the stage of NYU's Loewe Theatre on December 5th to present an evening of Masterworks. Known for their commitment to performing both seminal works for percussion ensemble and for continuing to push the envelope by exploring new and contemporary music, this concert will be no exception. Highlights of the evening will include the world premiere of Sakpata, by New York based percussionist Javier Diaz. Diaz explains, "The focus of this work is on combining Afro-Cuban chants and prayers with modern percussion instruments. Although the piece is through-composed, it strives to preserve the spontaneity and freedom characteristic of Afro-Cuban music." Another feature of the evening will be the New York premiere of Elliott Carter's Tintinnabulations for six percussionists. This is Carter's first work for percussion ensemble, and while he may not have written for this combination of instruments before, that certainly did not deter him from creating another carefully crafted and masterful piece of music.

In addition, the ensemble will be performing NYU Professor Julia Wolfe's Dark Full Ride for four drum sets, NYU student Paul Frucht's arrangement of Philip Glass's Prelude to End Game, Harold Farberman's Combinations for six percussionists, and Edgard Varèse's Ionisation, which was the first ever work for percussion ensemble alone and has become a landmark within the repertoire. As is the case with all of NYU Percussion Ensemble concerts, this one promises to provide a night full of interesting, unique, and exciting works for percussion.
